Bruce Simms

Over the past 20 plus years, Bruce has developed a wide range of geotechnical design experience within the land development and infrastructure sectors including site investigations, geotechnical design and project management services. He enjoys connecting with people and growing strong robust relationships.
This has included geotechnical design and reporting on horizontal infrastructure, highways, commercial, industrial and large-scale subdivision developments within complex geological settings, earthworks specifications, retaining wall design, stability assessments and contract management.
He has also had experience within project management; specifically risk management, a comprehensive schedule of qualities that reflect the construction methodology and delivering projects on time and within a specified budget.

Shahin Ghanooni

Shahin studied at Imperial College, London where he received a BEng in Civil Engineering with First class honours. He continued his studies and received an MSc in soil mechanics and engineering seismology and a Phd in soil dynamics from Imperial college.
Shahin is highly experienced in design and analysis of slope stability, retaining walls, foundation design and treatment, liquefaction analysis and remediation, deep excavation, design of piled foundations and two and three-dimensional finite element analysis.
His experience also includes site investigation, preparation of Geotechnical reports based on the results of laboratory and field tests, construction supervision and selection of materials for construction.
Shahin has been involved with the design of Embankment Dams for hydroelectric schemes, design of flood alleviation schemes and stop banks with many years of experience in the site investigation, preparation of technical specifications and selection of materials for embankment construction, construction supervision and the design of embankment dams against seismic loading along with many different site-specific problems.

Chris Adams
Principal Structural Engineer

Chris is a Chartered Professional Engineer with extensive experience in structural, civil, and geotechnical design and construction supervision across a diverse range of projects. His expertise includes low-rise commercial developments—such as tilt slab and portal frame construction—alongside residential structures, retaining walls, and water infrastructure systems, including wastewater and stormwater design. Chris is highly skilled in the design of timber, concrete, and steel structures, ensuring compliance with industry standards and delivering practical, buildable solutions.
In addition to building and civil works, Chris has significant experience in telecommunication infrastructure, including the design and construction supervision of towers, poles, and associated systems. He oversees all aspects of telecommunication projects, from concept design through to implementation, ensuring technical accuracy and safety.
Chris’s background also encompasses formwork design for temporary structures, long-span bridge beam installation, and complex tunnelling operations, including underground in-situ concrete placement and support formwork systems. His hands-on experience in construction techniques and site supervision enables him to bridge design intent with practical execution.
As part of ABuild, Chris operates in a CPEng capacity, reviewing and signing off all structural PS4 works, ensuring compliance and quality assurance across projects.

Mojtaba Farrokh

Mojtaba Farrokh is an accomplished professional with expertise in structural engineering. With a twenty-year background in the design and analysis of structures, computational mechanics, structural optimization, machine learning, and computer programming, Mojtaba has excelled in the design and analysis of concrete dams and appurtenant structures and dam safety assessment. His career highlights include the design and analysis of several tall concrete dams.
As an Associate University Professor, Mojtaba Farrokh showcased exceptional teaching and research capabilities, notably supervising multiple postgraduate students, and publishing numerous impactful research articles in the realm of structural engineering. His expertise spans advanced structural analysis, innovative design methodologies, seismic analysis, etc., enabling him to significantly influence the organization, inspire teams, and enhance project outcomes positively. His strengths in problem-solving, leadership, and collaboration further amplify his ability to drive excellence and innovation in academic and research endeavours.

Paul Clarke

Paul is a strong team player since joining our Wellington Structural Team in September. He brings 18 years of experience as a Structural Engineer, locally and internationally and has had large involvement in administering of contracts in the role of Contract Engineer as well as design and assessment.
During his career Paul has been involved in projects ranging from infrastructure, telecommunications and commercial through to industrial change of use, upgrades and alterations.

Ben Hillis

Ben has been with ABuild team for the since 2000 as a graduate structural engineer. Ben focuses on retaining wall structures on behalf of ABuild and its clients. He enjoys the challenges of Engineering, particularly in the Wellington region.
He is passionate about design solutions for slip retaining and thinking outside of the box. Having been involved in both structural and geotechnical design gives him a unique ability to combine both disciplines in the design.
Ben’s technical skills are inclusive of drafting AutoCAD including geotechnical, structural and drainage; geotechnical fieldwork and measure up of sites; site inspections and monitoring of construction works; design of retaining walls, foundations, structural and drainage works.

Niall is a versatile Structural and Civil Engineer with over 8 years of experience delivering technically sound, code-compliant solutions across residential, commercial, and public infrastructure projects in New Zealand and Ireland. His expertise spans structural design, site coordination, and multi-disciplinary integration, ensuring efficient and high-quality project outcomes.
Currently a key member of our structural team, Niall is actively contributing to telecommunications infrastructure projects, applying his technical knowledge and collaborative approach to meet complex engineering challenges. He is pursuing CPEng registration, reflecting his commitment to professional growth and industry standards.
Niall’s technical capabilities include AutoCAD drafting, structural inspections, and construction monitoring for a wide range of projects, including residential developments, water infrastructure, and telecommunications systems. His ability to combine precision with practical problem-solving makes him a valuable asset in delivering innovative and reliable engineering solutions.

Najla Kunhimon

Najla is a highly experienced Senior Geotechnical Engineer with 12 years of consultancy and construction expertise, specializing in geotechnical design, foundation and ground improvement solutions, retaining structures, slope stabilization, and track formation design. She brings a strong technical foundation combined with practical site management skills to deliver safe, efficient, and innovative solutions.
Her extensive experience spans projects across New Zealand, Australia, the Pacific Islands, and Asia, working with both public and private sector clients. Najla is currently progressing toward her CPEng chartership, having recently submitted her application, reflecting her commitment to professional excellence.
Collaborative by nature, Najla works closely with multidisciplinary teams—including structural, civil, and mechanical engineers, architects, project managers, and contractors—to achieve high-quality outcomes. She is passionate about mentoring junior engineers and fostering knowledge-sharing within her teams, while continuously learning and applying best practices to complex geotechnical challenges.

Jack Milford
Senior Geotechnical Engineer

Jack has worked extensively on geotechnical projects in New Zealand, Australia and the Pacific Islands.
This includes geological mapping, complex site investigations, technical report writing and design (Desktop, Factual, Concept and Detailed Design), construction monitoring, liquefaction assessments and slope stability modelling.
His experience in large scale projects and similar linear infrastructure projects is invaluable in delivering an efficient investigation and providing detailed and relevant outputs.

Shaheel Muzibur

Having completed a Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil) at the end of 2018, Shaheel moved to Aotearoa New Zealand. He is ambitious, has a positive attitude and is hard working.
Shaheel regularly works on projects for ABuild’s clients undertaking geotechnical ground investigation, reporting, and analysing, investigating risks or geological hazards.
Shaheel is adept at building and maintaining relationships with contractors, clients and other professionals involved on the project from commencement through to completion of the project.

Louise Frazer
Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer

Louise is an engineering geologist with four years of experience under her belt. Louise loves the outdoors so spends the majority of her working weeks out in the field undertaking geotechnical investigations both shallow and deep.
Louise coordinates all the fieldwork for ABuild projects and our clients. She knows what is required on site and has a great rapport with the subcontractors. In addition to fieldwork, Louise is adept at logging and analysis of the ground data following the fieldwork. She is an asset to the delivery team and their clients.

James Coleman

James has a wide range of experience within the telecommunications sector and in working with various clients. He is adept in undertaking site investigations, site design, construction monitoring, final inspections and QA.
James is an experienced designer and leads to assist the team to deliver to client’s requirements. James has a strong telecommunications and design background and as such has a very good understanding of all facets of the operational and strategic requirements of the telco sector.
James started his telco journey as a designer and drafter which has provided him with thorough and first-hand knowledge of processes and procedures to compliment his strong client and stakeholder relationship skills. He is well regarded for his hands-on approach and collaborative project leadership, creating “one team” project environments to successfully deliver timely and quality solutions.

With extensive experience in CAD software, including ArchiCAD, Revit, and AutoCAD, Virag produces accurate, high-quality drawings that facilitate seamless project execution. Her in-depth knowledge of the New Zealand Building Code and relevant standards ensures compliance and reliability in all aspects of design and documentation.

Emma prides herself on her internal and external relationships and ensuring clients are kept ‘in the loop’ at all times through the early stages of their project.

Jessica Kirk

Jessica is an organised and detail-driven Project Manager with Certified associate in project management (CAPM) credentials and hands-on experience supporting construction and engineering projects from initiation through delivery. She is skilled in coordinating multidisciplinary teams—including structural and geotechnical engineers—while ensuring compliance with NZS 3910 contract conditions, health and safety standards, and client specifications.
Jessica is proficient in project management tools such as MS Project Planner, ticketing systems, and SiteDocs for real-time task tracking and health & safety management. She excels at preparing and maintaining project documentation, monitoring progress against milestones, and facilitating clear communication between stakeholders, consultants, and site teams.
